The month of December is a busy time across many industries and the impending break can add pressure to already stressed and fatigued staff. It can be tempting to cut corners to meet these deadlines before starting our holidays with friends and family. The beach may be calling, but to take our eyes of the ball at this very busy time can ruin this usually happy and joyful time of year!

The festive season is also the traditional time for celebratory functions in the workplace with many businesses using it as an opportunity to celebrate their successes over the past 12 months, as well as an opportune time for the workforce to let their hair down, enjoy some good food, drink and company! It is also a time of year that many people are using main roads and congestion on these main roads while holiday makers head to their favourite destinations can be troublesome to say the least!

So while this is a fantastic time of year, to allow ourselves to lose focus on safety while the risks associated with certain hazards is temporarily raised can have terrible and tragic consequences!

The importance of safety at this time of year has been stressed by the General Manager of WorkCover’s Health and Safety Department, John Watson:

“While we all want to have a safe and enjoyable end of year celebration, local businesses should remember that they are still responsible for the health and safety of workers at these events”

A good example of Christmas period risk is the devastating death tolls on the nation’s roads we see each year! Between December 23, 2012 and January 3rd, 2013, 56 deaths were recorded on Australian and New Zealand roads.

The team at Fluro training would like to take this chance to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a merry Christmas! Stay safe and we’ll see you next year with a fresh batch of health and safety training courses. Until then, if you are looking to join the construction industry in 2014, you’ll need a white card from Fluro! The Construction safety induction specialists!
